I have read your blog "L'Etoile de Normandie" with interest and would like to know how successful your campaign for reunification of Normandie has been.
The greatest threat to democracy comes from centralisation. Many in the UK, more specifically those in South East England and London, criticise the European Union as an anti-democratic and centralising body, distant from the needs of ordinary citizens. How ironic, because it is really the centralisation of power in London that distances ordinary citizens in the rest of England from the operation of democracy.
Like France, the UK also suffers from endemic centralisation of both public and private society. "Les étrangers" also view the UK through the lens of a London perspective. "The UK is London isn't it?" is often the response one hears from non-European visitors.
It is only through vibrant self-sustaining, financially, culturally, politically, sub-national entities (Regions) that we can break this cycle of provincial marginalisation.
We must look to Europe to provide our lead. The motto of the European Union is "Unie dans la diversité" and it is through the alternative constitutional template provided by "Une Europe des Régions" that this long term goal can be achieved.
It is strong Regional affinities that will provide the basis of a more politically integrated yet diverse Europe, respecting cultural differences without reinforcing National stereotypes.
Time and again we see the advance of a more socially aware, caring and equitable European society frustrated by the short term political expediency of National actors.
The UK govt administration, prompted by public ignorance and apathy continues to block any attempts to create a more democratic and open European political structure. France is also only too willing to cooperate in this conspiracy to deny the legitimate rights of all European citizens.
I wish you success in your campaign
I say yes to a Europe of Regions
Peter Davidson
